365 Days of Gratitude: How a Year of Thank Yous Changed My Life

1–2 minutes

Gratitude is an emotion of appreciation. It’s acknowledging the good in our lives and the source of that goodness, whether it’s a Higher Power, others or our own decisions and efforts. This practice is a quiet way for us to focus on the positive of life. The impact of this sacred practice goes beyond physical health, it improves mental and social well-being too.

Why Gratitude

I began gratitude journaling during a time of emotional heaviness. I was a student, constantly worried of the future. I decided to slow down and thank the Creator for the blessings and myself for my decisions. Essentially, to focus on the positive and rewire my brain into becoming more of an optimist.

The Practice: 10 Thank Yous a Day

I chose a small notebook just for this practice and kept it near my bed. Sometimes, I carried it with me. Each night, I committed to writing 10 things I was thankful for.

When I didn’t feel like writing, I would type it into my phone or simply just speak it to myself. Gratitude before sleep also rewires the mind. It helps us rest with a grateful heart and a peaceful mind, leading to a better sleep.

The Transformation- What Changed

  • Emotional Shifts
    • I have become more present and peaceful, finding joy in the smallest things.
  • Mindset Shifts
    • I have stopped taking things personally. Seeing good in every situation, I handle stress with more clarity and grace.
  • Spiritual Awareness
    • This practice strengthened my connection with the Creator. I now see life as a series of gifts and lessons. I understand the Creator in a deeper level, and myself as the Divine’s creation and my physical being as a gift from that Creator.

If You’d Like to Start

Here’s how you can begin your own gratitude journal:

  • Use a notebook or digital journal, whichever feels easier.
  • Start with 5-10 things that you are grateful for daily.
  • Make it fun. Keep it light and honest.
  • Try journaling before sleep. Let this be your closing prayer, conversation with your Creator and yourself.

Here is a reflection question for you:

What are you Grateful for Today?
